What would be the the best martial art to start with? I have always wanted to start a martial art, one of the problems is where I live. There is not a lot to choose from.

I've personally started martial arts 3/4 of a year ago, and ahd thought about it thoroughly. I've decided to do Wing Tsun (or comparable, if you like) for there is no vocal strain (shouting) no real falling and throwing (judo) but still is extremely effective and very soon, certain habits you acquire during training occupy your mind even during time off. It's a lot of fun, you learn excellent control of your body and strength.

My advice: try it!

What is your goal? Self-defense? Fitness? Meet people? Competition? How much will you spend? What is within your driving range? What is your current fitness level?

I had always been interested in the martial arts so when I decided to do it, I first looked at what I wanted to do. I didn't want to grapple or throw so that left a few out, then I looked at what was nearby. I decided on taekwondo because there were a few schools nearby. The first one I saw did not impress me at all (my gut instinct) but the second one hooked me. They answered every question I had and it wasn't about the money, it was about what I wanted. I am happy with the decision I have made.

My suggestion is, first, decide what you want. Kicking? Grappling? Street fighting (which I think you can get from many types of MA, it depends on your teacher)? Then see what is nearby. If your school is very close to your home, there is no excuse to not go to class. Go with your guts, if you think they are more interested in your money that in you, they are. Forget them.

Good luck!
