Some years ago I bought a Mook Jong for training as I was able to appreciate it's usefullness. I have never studied Wing Chun and just use it for my own set training drills. It's in my Garage wall mount type.

Anyhow one day I got talking to a Wing Chun practitioner. On saying I had a Mook Jong he was quite offended that I should dare buy one with no Wing Chun training. And then went on to say that all the training I ever did on a Mook would be a total waste of time as I had not received the higher level Wing Chun training for the Mook Jong form.

I quickly settled the matter by asking him to try out any attack and I would use any of the training drills that I use on the Mook. His attack was totally nullified. He then went on to accuse me of being of some level in Wing Chun myself and that I had been holding back. At this point I could'nt help but LoL.

It's like taking a cross with Jesus and carve it to a totem. Christian bigots will be offended. Wing Chun is a religion. Next thing you need to do is to take a picture of Yip-Man with any of his students, cut the student's head out and paste in your own, claim that you are the only posthumous Yip-Man student that learned the real, ultimate, complete, traditional posthumous Wing Chun, and start your own association.

Good luck

Maybe to some, but there are fanatics in most arts.

I am A Wing Cun guy and I could care less if someone has a Mook Jong, fer cryin' out loud you can just order one on the internet if you want one. By the way, they also double as a nifty place to hang your shirts.

Now that's funny Even better, just scan the photo, and digitally alter it with your head in there.

Jason,

The Mook Jong certainly has a direct association with Wing Chun, but I see no reason why anyone cannot buy one. In WC, there is a specific form for the dummy, which is for fairly senior students. In some schools, students are not allowed to train on it until authorized by the sifu. But that applies to other items as well, and to other arts.

This guy is a nut bar in my opinion. The fact that he started making *accusing* you of having some level of WC training is just bizarre. As in all groups, there are good and bad.

Use the Mook as you see fit.

Regards,

Bill C. Wing Chun guy

There are Kung Fu styles besides Wing Chun that use mook jongs. My style uses one with fixed steel pipes for arm and leg hardening. The mook jong itself moves a bit, rather than the arms as in wing chun. That way you can get an extra bit of intensity by whipping your strike directly into a moving object. When you can use a forearm or shin strike full power against a 4' pipe, you don't have to worry too much about whether or not your material works. I have seen other styles of mook jongs, some of whom have different arm positions, or more than four arms, made with various material including pvc piping (?) and bamboo. Various styles use their mook jongs for various purposes. Not all are called mook jong.

I think you can build a modified mook jong using the legs of chairs. Recall reading an old article by Eric Lee which mentioned working out against furniture. The only thing is it doesn't fight back.

Just remembered that funny contraption from the Jackie Chan movie Battle Creek Brawl. Now that did hit back ! It was made of a bit of everything, I think. Although it required operation by Jackie's trainer to actually hit back. He even did some wrestling/grappling with it.

I don't believe that was O'Harra. It was Parsons, on the boat to the island.
