I'm curious to know just how widespread this is and what the views are:

Here in Oz we have a number of organisations that practice thus:

* Run fast track schemes to black belt (2 years in some cases) * Promote sensei training schemes - the recipient is graded as per normal but teaches classes for the organisation after only a few gradings (whilst wearing a sho dan ho grade - junior black belt - for appearances) * Allow inexpereinced participants to instruct children (without any understanding of the specific developmental requirements of kids and the need to bar certain exercises from their curriculum). * Encourage participants to sell the scheme on a door to door basis

I'm sure there are a number of interesting variations out there.

There has been an attempt over here to force clubs to become government accredited under fairly strict criteria. If not govt accredited then basically you cannot hire or use government owned premises, community centres, schools etc to teach. Some of the criteria covers requirements for 1st aid certs, min five years experience (a bit open)......

Any ideas on how to stamp out shonks?

Karate in Oz, do the flying-monkeys have their own style? Do you practice on the yellow brick road?
