I think Judo, JuJitus, and Akido are common sources for subdual techniqes for police.

FMA and IMA are common, espically for anti-knife training.

KravMagda seems designed quite well of an in-shape paramillitary person, espically if you don't want to devote too much time.

I can't say I have any disagreement here. I believe, at one time, aikido was trained in some areas. I'm starting to look into KravMagda myself. Just a couple thoughts. When you are looking at knife fighting/training, also listen to your Law Enforcement Trainers. I believe they have just raised the distance of safety to 30 feet. IOW, chances are the knife fighter can close and attack before most armed responses so within that limit, don't even think about your weapon.

Second, before you make a 'public commitment', try to find out what your legal liability is with 'additional expertise'. Oh yeah. One last thing; always CYA

Phillipino (I have no idea why it's FMA and not PMA) and Indonseian Martial Arts.

Specifically Kali, Escrima, Arnis, Kuntao and Pentjak Silat.

Tae Kwon Do; it's short for the names of the Korean organizations. Stretching is key to it though- you should get one of those machines. Best of luck in your chosen career-

Tae Kwon Do. You'll get there fast and look kewl. Of course you'll be baffling the bad guys with kewl kicks and before they can actually do anything they will be jumped by your partners from behind.

Just as a note, arts with controlling movements and joint locks are good because not injuring someone who you are attempting to subdue is legally beneficial.

There is a cop who has just started training at my Aikido school who has commented that it's something he feels more of his co-workers should take. Might be worth a look.

Happy training in whatever you choose!

IMHO, you need to be very careful not to study something that will get you in too much trouble if you use it. Many of the law enforcement officers I know who study train in Aikido because of its emphasis on control not strikes. Takes longer to get proficient, but is well suited for your job. The other recommendation would be FMA (Fillipino Martial Arts) of Kali, Escrima, or Arnis. The emphasis is on stick work at first which gets you used to going against weapons. Most of the counter attacks take aim at the attacking limbs first before going to the body. Some of my training mates who are also law enforcement officers say it allows them to stop there since hitting to the body and doing too much damage will get them in trouble. IMHO, Aikido and Kali balance each other well. There is a Police Martial Arts Association (PMAA) mailing list. Check with your department for what is approved. Hope this helps in some small way.
