My daughter recently started judo. In her last class, she learned tani otoshi as a counter to ogoshi.

I did a little bit with her last night (in our family roomm and I noticed that as I threw her, I landed on my left side with my left arm bent and close to my body. I thought that might present a problem with hurting your elbow, ribs, whatever.

Should I be letting go of the sleeve and extending my arm out or put it above the uke?

This also seems like it would be dangerous to the uke when done faster.

Or maybe I'm not doing something right. My daughter told me that she was told to extend her left leg as far as she can behind the uke. I thought it worked better my way - pretty much extend my left leg to trap her legs (while lowering my body) and pull backward.

At any rate, I'll ask the sensei for clarification tonight.

Generally not possible, when using Tani Otoshi as a counter. But you should be landing on your side correctly, you won't be slapping, of course, but you shouldn't need to, as your opponent is providing a certain softness in your landing.

Absolutely! This *is* one of the more violent of throws. Uke needs to be especially careful of a head whiplash. But if uke is practiced enough at ukemi, they'll be alright. The problem with this throw is the suddenness of it, combined with the relatively short and fast drop. Not much time to get used to the idea that you're about to be slammed to the ground!

Hard to say with just this description... easier to see than to describe. You've got the right idea, though, ask sensei!!
