Okay friends, here we go... Bear with me, this is going to be a long post, and mostly stream-of-conciousness...

I'm a knife-knut, like most of you, tho I don't post often. As some of you know, long exposure to one of us can cause similar afflictions in wives...

Well, my wife, (We will call her Garnet), Now has the disease. She has watched me progress in my disease for a few years, going from cheap knives to better ones. Watched TV with me for hours while I absently flip stud-folders, etc. Well, she now has the bug.

She went and bought a Gerber Gator, plain, and got angry that she could not flip it open. (She made a good point, when I told her it was not built to be a one-hander; (Lockback). 'It only has to open fast'.)

I bought a couple of 'bandit'* attachable studs for them; we love them, and she's getting good at the flip. She keeps hers in the top of her purse.

However, now she's getting into the real thing, and money is not really an object. (Well, she makes most of it!). Now she needs and wants an edc. (Like so many of mine).

Most of us would talk about a 'gentleman's' folder. Or at least, something like a Cuda EDC or a Kershaw Leek. NOW: Here's the real dig: I took her to Walmart and had her look at the only Kershaw they carry, the Chive. She was, 'Wow! Exactly! But, *Oh, it's too little* *frown*. ' (Ever hear that guys?)

I told her that the Leek was exactly the same, but, larger, the same size as my CUDA EDC and my AR3. She likes the length of the blades there, but, she needs the assisted opening of the Leek with the handle feel of the AR3; She does not want the slim profile of the Leek.

IS THERE A MIX??? Assisted opening, Fat handle, 3' blade? (But not like the Gerber Gator hunter; Still slim, like an AR3?)

Again, I Challenge you to help me here! I have all the catalogs too...

I love my wife. She's the best, but never would I get this lucky. I live with a generous amount of tolerance for my addiction, but that's as close to an interest in knives as I'll ever get from her. And I'm certainly grateful for what I get.

SOG Flash, maybe? Haven't seen one, and the sizes aren't quite right. But might be worth consideration. Alternatively, how about a BM 705 and learn how to flick that (pull Axis lock button back with thumb, flicks easily with

Hey Waylander!, How's it goin'? I'm proud to say that my wife has always supported my knife & Gun habit and she too has her favorites, of both! I couldn't be luckier! It's nice to see other guys as happy with their better half as I am, it seems too many people I know don't have anything in common? I don't understand that, I don't see how you could have a concrete marriage if you didn't do things together? I'm just glad to say that my wife is the greatest in my book and there is no one I'd rather be with, we do everything together and it doesn't make us want to be apart, just more together. I do have a suggestion for a trial compromise knife, have her try one of the Aluminum Scaled Scallions, they're bigger than the Chive, open like lightening and have more of a 'handle' to hold onto. They're great knives and come in severa different colors. I haven't found anyone yet that didn't find them handy. I hope you can have her try one, I think she'll like it. Come see us at the Club! Waylander,

Wow . . . And I thought my wife was nibbling at the bug . . . though, she did bite hard on the chive . . .

I love my leek, but I'll agree, it's a slim bugger. What I've been thinking is the possibility of custom scales. I'd need to find longer screws. The back holes are threadded all the way through, and they look like a #2. Hard to find, but not impossible. Use the screws to hold on the plain side, and nuts to hold on the clipped. It would turn the frame lock into a liner lock, but that's only semantics. have to do something about the safety . . .

Anyway, back on topic

As far as the safety goes you can tighten it down wit a #6 torx wrench or take it off all together. I've seen some fantastic knives customized that used the Leek as a base, fancy scales, nice filework etc. It's a good foundation to do it on. Good luck, SPECOPS #A-01C President 'The Official Chris Kirk Knifeshow Fanclub' http://www.ckfc.2ya.com

You guys all ROCK!!! Thanks for the imput, and, keep it coming! Garnet so far likes the look of the Whirlwind the most, but is still looking. To add to the pot of criteria, she just surprised me with the fact that she likes the black blades. I wonder how I would get Kershaw to TiNi a whirlwind???

I believe Carl mentioned it.. the Kershaw Blackout... nearly Identical to the Whirlwind except it has a black blade and doesn't have those three drilled holes (unfortunately).. I would personally recommend the Kershaw Avalanche.. though it is not a black blade, it has a g-10 handle and CPM-440V blade steel and is much nicer looking than the molded Blackout/Whirlwinds.

For what it's worth, it was VERY popular to name female children after precious stones of the day. Remember this was a period immediately following the Victorian Era. My grandmother's birth name was Ruby Pearl Mitchell. As a child, she was to have emulated a princess, as often as possible in the little, tiny town of Hamburg, Iowa, from 1901 through her teens, when she was expected to marry. My grandfather, an extemely wise man, often said he ended up with a 'real gem of a wife.'

God Bless, Dan'L
