Can anyone here tell me the correct way to shoot in on an opponent to take them down? When grappling in my Jiu-Jitus class, i have often attempted shoots but i am obviously doing them wrong because i often get caught in a guillotine choke by my opponent when i try them. Am i doing them too high on the opponents body? Not tucking my head somewhere i should be tucking it? (i ussually go around waist height, maybe a little lower around the upper thigh.) Also, i often lose hold of my opponents legs if i dont get him down straight away and am holding onto them for anything more than a couple of seconds. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Actually, no it isn't. It's only suicide if you can't wrestle and try it against a wrestler.

Otherwise, a proper shot is a very sound method for closing and taking your man down, without getting hit.

Shoot with your chest, not your head.

Keep your head up. It will lean slightly forward as you go in, but never too far.

Chest never ventures forward of your lead knee.

Elbows in. Palms out and slightly downward.

Lower your vertical level before and as you are shooting. Do not bend forward to do this. Keep good spinal posture. You'll need this if you have to do any lifting once you get in.

The purpose of a shot is to get close to the man *while still in good posture*. If you overextend yourself and reach out with your arms as you shoot, you will crumble under a sprawl.

Step in between his legs with your right foot, toes meeting up with his.

Now, you can either penetrate to the knee in a drop step, or remain standing for a step-in penetration. We'll do a step-in.

After stepping in with your right foot, step past him outside and behind his right foot with your left foot.

At the same time, either come inside his right leg with your right hand, or go immediately to both hands behind both knees (right hand to left knee, and vice versa).

Head is still up, pressed in tight against his side upper ribs

A common mistake is to shoot with your head to the side of your opponent, at or just above his hip level. That puts it in a position where it's easy for him to counter with that choke. If you find you are doing this, you can shoot with your head driving into his abdomen area in front of him, instead of just placing it to his side. Use your head, so to speak...

Alternatively, shoot lower, or even place your head higher. If you can, try a shoot on someone where you can see your own position in a mirror, or on video if you have access to one where you train. You're probably making it easy for the guy to counter, and a little adjustment of your head placement will take most of that opportunity from him.

Hope that helps,

Not sure if this will help you, but when you shoot in, no matter were your head is on your opponent, keep one side of your head right up against is body. That way when you wrap your arms around your chin should be between one of your shoulders and their body. They will be able to get one arm under your throat, but shouldn't be able to get their other arm around to fully secure the choke as they will have to reach under your arm as opposed to between your shoulder and head.

Hope this helps some, Jared

for the takedown.I've seen so many people just walk right in and teligraph a shot, back in 93 and 94 you could do that to most MA and get away with it,now days fighters are getting wiser. The best way to shoot or the way i do it is to draw the fighter in by letting him take a swing at me.Reason being is that his movement coming into you as you are going into him makes the shot 100% faster, also as he is extended for the strike so he has no time to get in what we call wrestling (underhooks)which is the main defense for repeling a shoot. If you do this right you will never get choked. If you have any questions you can mail them to our site http://members.tripod.com/~thedemon78/indexSS.html
