Does anybody know the Korean term for the 'Heaven hand' position at the beginning of pattern Kwang Gae in the ITF patterns? Also what are your views on why it is performed -in your opinion do you feel it has a practical purpose or just a philosophical one? After a bit of research I found that it is used in the Shotokan Katas (Kanku Dai), and that one explanation goes as follows: The movement symbolises the concept of 'form becoming emptiness & emptiness becoming form' ('Shiki soku ze ku, ku soku ze shiki'. To elaborate, this is a concept to understanding proper practice. The act of directing full attention through the small triangular space, concentrating & focussing the mind, the trivial & unimportant are ignored & ones whole being is centred on a true perception of reality & calm recognition of what is required to interact properly with this. What are your interpretations of why we perform this move & others (such as the hand positions in Moa sogi A, B, C & D at the beginning & end of the patterns?)

It can be used for 'windowing' or 'mirroring'. Levitation can also be one of the skills this mudra can manifest. Which is probably why its so important in kicking systems like TKD. They probably discovered this by accident and it helps 'masters' perform those 5-6-7 kick in the air combinations much easyer.

Sure, sure all that zen ****. They even have special power words and incantations translated into korean, japanese and who knows what else.

Horseshit. Meaningless words. I'd explain the process here but maybe I wont. I'd have to bind the transmission with a contract that would accellerate the destruction of anyone that serves to abuse its power.

Its one of the extra mudra added to the 9 invocative hand seals. Its stolen from mongolian and siberian shamanism and i'd advise against working with it beyond it present ostentatious form in martial arts.

Its roots are in some very black and mysterious occult practices. I was surpised to see some of our stuff in some books at barnes and noble on indonesian and filipino arts. They try to mix it with islam, catholicism and christianity. Total sillyness. Its black magic.
