Although I don't see a problem in what you did it was STUPID to pull a handgun on the dog. If he was seriously going to attack you, it would have recognized your poise as a threat and attacked. Since I have huge ammounts of experience with dogs, this is my suggestion for future possible encounters: 1) Show the dog no fear, but don't look them in the eyes. Fear makes them nervous and will make them attack, and looking straight to the eyes is a challenge. Chances are that the dog won't attack you, but just approach you or sniff you. 2)If for some reason the dog DID attack you, the best defensive maneuver is a quick kick in the side, or even better, on his underside right below his forelegs. That is painful and scary, but not really harmful. Hope this helps.

Cops kill dogs with handguns all the time; SOP for dealing with a loud dog at a dynamic warrant service. Dogs understand when you have something in your hand- unless they've been trained to confront a weapon, they won't do it. If they have been trained, they get dropped because life ain't like the nice man in the redsuit. Those dogs are trained with the idea of sacrificing them without a qualm in order to distract an armed perp from a human target.

Bare your teeth, glare at him, make growl noises in your throat, advance towards the dog without cutting him off from retreat. Works on humans too.

Dogs' legs are easy to break- you're going to take some bites, but you can cripple or kill them pretty easily. A weapon deals with them instantly.
