for anyone who has a CRKT (or maybe a Carson) knife with the so-called flipper... does it really perform the way it's supposed to?

i could see how it could make opening easier... but i could also see it getting caught on pockets or whatever and causing the blade to open a bit... so everytime you go for it you stab yourself

or does the LAWKS system somehow prevent this anyway?

It works, It takes a little getting used to to transition from the thumb stud. I haven't had any problem with it snaging in my pocket. It is one of the few knives I own that is easy to open with gloves on. Mine is one of the M16 knives and doesn't have the lawks lock. Either way the lawks lock only works when the knife is open.

I carry liner locks in my back right pocket with the tip down, so the flipper doesn't have anything to get in the way.

I use it to get the blade started on my M1 because the thumb stud is not so

Yes it's a bit of a gimmick but it works if you apply a flip of the wrist at the same time. Luckily, though, these knives also have a thumb stud which would be preferable, at least for me.

I personally prefer a knife with a flipper. I wear finger braces on my index and middle fingers and that makes using a thumb stud nearly impossible. The flipper is a great alternative and I feel a better one even if my fingers did work! I currently have a Kershaw Boa and Chive and am now looking at the extra large Cuda Maxx Stiletto with a flipper. Smooth and just as quick if not quicker than an auto. Never had it catch on the pants or open by accident...

Kit Carson came up with 'the Carson Flipper' because he didn't like thumb-studs. If you'll notice on his knives the studs act as a positive stop and aid to lock- up more than anything. It's a fast way to open a knife and I've never had it get in my way. Of course you combine the 'Flipper' with 'assisted opening' and you come up with a Ken Onion Design that turns the 'Flipper' into a 'Triggger' which is even easier! 'Frame locks actually use part of the frame to engage the Tang ratherthan a liner, it's a very positive lockup, makes a folder into a fixed blade, they're that dependable. My or one of my EDC's is a Cuda Maxx, it is a frame lcking opener with Daerrel Ralph's take on the 'Flipper' idea, it's a fast knife to open, locks up as rigid as a fixed blade, and the type of 'Flipper' he uses also is a handguard. I never thouht there would be a true folding Bowie that was light yet strong enought ocarry. The Cuda Maxx is truly a dream come true for me. I always wanted a Bowie that I could carrt like a pocket knife, it's as fast to deploy as any knife I've ever seen and I've put it up against some pretty quick guys, they were surprised because they were showing off their brand of knife. I was at the shot show and I won't mentionthe name or the brand but you can probably guess, they say no one can out perform their knives , hich is almost true but I challenfed him to a ' Quick draw' competitionright there and won. He got mad at first then realized I wasn't putting down his brand ,I also happen to carry his brand od knife too, I was just showing him a different approach to deployment and striking in one shot. I hung around and when he wasn't too busy we talked knives for a while and I told him some of my ideas only to see them come into their lign before too long, not exactly what I told him but based on the same idea. I'd rather have a flipper than a thumb stud but there are some great 'Thumbers' out there that are a little slower but damn effective. I couldn't give the CUDA Maxx a higher recommendation, I have the original Bowie styled blade, and carry it no matter what else I may be carrying and have since the day I got it. SPECOPS #A-01C President 'The Official Chris Kirk Knifeshow Fanclub' http://www.ckfc.2ya.com

Have you seen the Stiletto model? I like the Bowie for utility purposes, but the Stiletto is really cool. I may just have to buy both.....

The Stileeto is cool but in TX you have the good old 'double edge' law that blade doesn't fit into. The Bowie styled Cuda Maxx is great for me, it ruined me! I can't carry anything without carrying it! True love! SPECOPS.
