A couple of days ago I broke two bones in my left foot sparring. While jumping aside to avoid a front ball kick I landed on the side blade of my foot and heard a loud snap. The doctor told me it would be at least 8 weeks until it healed.

I was wondering if anybody else had a similar situation and how practical it is to still study with a cast. Will it mess things up without the correct stances while punching and blocking? Also, would shoes prevent this type of thing? I would appreciate any suggestions or info.

Thanks,

MY instructor absolutly FORBID bare feet in his dojo. To him it wasn't only a practice hall, but a temple as well. I had to buy a pair of 'boots' alot like a wooshoo boot, they were minnetonka brand, moccisin boots. Supported enough BUT were lightweight and alot like a leather sock. They allowed a little bit of a slide, but with kenjutsu a slide is a good thing. I don't know if this has helped you at all but, it's just another experience to draw from. SOMA

Got the purple stripe along the blade? Being six five, thin and really hyper has gotten me plenty of those turns but never with bone breakage. I did suffer ligament damage and really had to work just to get enough strength to shift a motorcycle. (Yep, go for my ankles and I'm through)

Yes, be a good boy and stay off it like your doctor told you to until it is healed.

Use a weight machine or 'bean bags' to do non-weight bearing exercise with that leg so you don't lose too much muscle tone.

Visualize yourself doing martial arts until you can train again. You can maintain a surprising amount of your skill by visualising every day for a period of time similar to your normal training time.

Don't rush it or you'll end up like bill walton, the basketball player who kept re-injuring the feet. As for exercise, do some upper body to keep the bloodflow up. Then sit down and do things such as rotating the foot around and lifting the foot.
