what's your laundry list for sending someone out in the world? lets say you have a reasonably fit twenty-year old and you want them to stand a fighting chance('surviving' chance?) at barehanded or lighlty armed combat. what do you teach them and how long would it take?

here's my list, just spitballing, you understand:

technic-front kick, good and solid, no snapping. round kick, shin and toe-in styles. heel and toe stomps.

straight jab, twist punch(taught as a cross, not shotokan style), hook punch, a few open hand strikes.

a good stand-up guard with variations. covering the head and body, intercepting punches(upper block, outer block, inner block.

osoto-gari, ouchi gari, kosoto-gari, koshi-nage(mix and match with seio, tai-otoshi etc.

single and double leg pulls.

front rolls, side and back falls, the guard and a few ways to get out of mount(i only know a few)

theory-

plenty of dynamic interaction, drilling a few basic responses to a few basic attacks, etc., defensive vs. offensive actions, risk and intent assesment.

'stuffing' a weapon into the attacker and screaming bloody murder.

structure, anatomy and physiology, the very basics.

the mile in nine minutes or better

six months, 1-2 hours a night., everything else is up to them, i say.

How to land How to take a punch How to strangle someone I'm really partial to Eskrima because of the short amount of time to acquire the skills. Of course, mastery is a whole 'nother ballgame. I don't like kicking much but am partial to stomping.

Eye jab? Really, Don? Maybe with my baston, but my reach is limited, quite limited.

I did it for a friend of mine, at his request. Pretty mucyh, he had a really big mouth and couldn't back it up.

Took us about a year. We kicked the shit out of him daily, pretty much. For about the first 6 months, he just took it. After that, he finally snapped one night when he was drunk, he started to fight back.. that was what it took. We spent six more months teaching him to fight by beating him.

He learned his lessons well, and continues to learn on the streets..

It's not about martial arts, really, in case like that. Just about being willing to fight and being tough.

Maybe it's me, but I think Chas' tongue in cheek was some of the best advice. No one mentioned the 2 easiest ways to 'winning a fight'; don't. The first move is to clench your teeth, smile, and talk to the guy. Second comes the hardest; that would be 'leave', crudely put Run Away. Bottom line; if you are confident enough to say something like 'hey man, I'm sorry, can I buy you a beer? then you'll win. Practicing the basics as some have pointed out and I agree with most. Just remember why you are training and some of the philosophy behind it.

I love that! Perfect description! (Why haven't I heard it before?) Except that for me, it's usually the other way round, and for getting through something half decent-sized, you need to do both.

Let him sniff the back of your hand, scratch him just above the tail (never met a dog that didn't love *that*)

Change a flat tyre. Effective communication skills (negotiation, public speaking, asking for what you want)

Actually, along the lines that others have posted: A friend of mine with a very solid background in martial arts, told me an interesting story: He's walking along a city street, and a group of young guys came up to him, looking to do him over. He looks at them, and says, 'So, you wanna fight, do ya?' 'Yeah!' they say. 'Fine,' he says, 'who are we gonna do?'

Cut a long story short, they all end up in a games arcade, playing Street Fighter.

I am highly amused.

incidentally, we were taking some mug shots for the nascent webpage and every teacher under thirty(including maself) looks like grim death ate their cookies. all the older types have got the silliest grins on their pans- it must be good to live that long...

telling? lol...

done it! or a variation thereof!

maybe i'll look at that list again

wrong start to finish. snapping a kick(or any technic) robs it of its power and leaves you open to the inevitable counters. thrusting kicks with good form and balance are the only way to go- proper timing and positioning relieves that nasty telegraphing problem. movement should flow quickly, naturally and strongly. flicking somebody with a limb is silly comparing to a really excellent and through booting.

Carl hat.
